tattoos and removal

In the June 1, 2009 issue of Time Magazine, Anita Hamilton wrote a brief article detailing a new method of tattoo ink removal. This revolutionary ink type was modified from its original version for the sake of tattoo appearance, but slightly increases the amount of laser removal sessions than its novel predecessor to remove.

I sent a copy of the following scan to the Flickr: HanziSmatter.com group for Tian to see. Hopefully, he’ll get a kick out of it:

My sister and I have talked about getting tattoos together. This has been an ongoing debate for years, but I never seem to imagine a design meaningful enough to get placed on my skin permanently. The tattoo would have to be customized and completely pertinent to something integral to my life philosophy if I were to get one. It’s difficult to encompass that much in one graphic, and another challenge completely to make it worthwhile enough to embed on my body. The only problem I have with the aforementioned article is that the title seems to promote impulsive action by people to run out and get tattoos. The term ‘fickle’ doesn’t seem appropriate here either, with its definition suggesting a characteristic of one lacking “steadfastness, constancy, or stability.” Indecisiveness and uncertainty are not markers of the fickle in this situation, but of one recognizing the weight of such a decision. LOLTatz showcases those who could have used a sense of hesitancy before committing to a tattoo. It’s my goal to avoid placement on this site, if I ever get inked.

I am a fan of lolliebottoms on BlogTV though. She is a well-known tattoo artist who livestreams when putting her creative talent to use on clients in ink. It’s entertaining to watch, if slightly bloody at times, but she creates beautiful work. You can also stop by and take the chance that I’m broadcasting; have a chat.

synonymous with change

Curiosity encouraged me to look up different words in place of ‘change’. Among these suggestions were: adjustment, conversion, development, distortion, innovation, modulation, mutation, reversal, shift, turnover, variance, and vicissitude.

What is striking about this list? There are words with opposing connotations to them, a negative or positive, depending on the way it is used. Mostly, however, the way a word is interpreted and given any form of directional content lies in the mindset of the one processing it. Adjustments can be good or bad. The same for conversions. A human being is constantly in some form of development, from the time of his or her birth to his or her death. Distortion is generally used in a detrimental way, such as one having a distorted sense of reality. Yet, it’s also a term used to denote the sound effects in musical instruments, like guitars. Innovation can be initially positive, but sometimes has a downside to its outcomes. Perhaps an invention that was meant to be used for the benefit of humanity is used against it, to wage war and violence. Alternatively, the presence of nuclear weapons may be dangerous, but many argue that it creates nations that can not only protect themselves, but by stalemating each other, peace is actually made possible and for longer periods of time.

I still have a nagging feeling that change does not have to fall into either category distinctly, like many things in life that I have over analyzed thus far. There are definite trends, sure, but suggestion is powerful. Being aware of one’s weaknesses by taking perspective from a different angle may uncover strengths, whereas paying attention to strengths can sometimes only serve to veil weaknesses. Awareness is painful. Change is not pleasant.

In life, change happens at varying speeds, sometimes through expected natural occurrences, and at times out of circumstances just beyond one’s control or vision. It’s a matter of how a person decides to receive the change at hand.

There was a recent layoff of someone dear to me, and it has affected me greatly. A few other things have led me to finally take the action of being part of two candidate pools of which I have a very good chance at being selected for both positions. They do not readily interfere with one another, and would provide me with greater financial security and general peace, even professional development. There are only mild constraints that can be worked through as details are shaped. Consequently though, my living arrangements are also entangled and bound to shift. I can only hope that I am making decent decisions and that the results from these choices and circumstances will only create a feeling of living authentically in the near future, and afford me the ability to provide for myself and attain my goals more easily. Nervous, but ready to stand and catch the next wave.

How do you perceive change? What is an example of something that has modified your actions, and how are you feeling about it?

And don’t think I haven’t noticed my feedburner count going up — thanks everyone. Comment on a post so we  can get better acquainted!

anti-green, but against global warming

Trees are fantastic. They produce oxygen, which coincidentally, we need. The oceans are great too – people vacation on beaches. We eat seafood. There is a plethora of recreational activities that take place in large bodies of water (scubadiving, sailing, emergency vehicle landings, expeditions around the known world into unknown territories, Discovery Channel documentaries). Then, there’s the practicality of being green — conserving energy and water (thereby saving money as well), hybrid cars and alternative fuel sources, recycling, greenhouse gases, air pollutants, water pollutants, saving space due to overabundant landfills.

Yet, the green initiative has prevented me thus far from finding a video camcorder that runs strictly on disposable batteries. A friend is traveling to another continent soon, to a rural, natural environment for the next three months. She will not be near many consistent electrical outlets, and needs a way to record a good majority of her stay.

We were looking at solar batteries too, but we’re not well-versed in the matter. Our combined amount of common sense tells us to not traipse off and spend hundreds on solar energy panels or “rechargers” that might not be compatible with any random camcorder.

What are your suggestions? She leaves in early June!

pool prodigy

Keith O’Dell Jr. is a two year old pool shark. I wonder if he needs a babysitter…

To anyone in America reading this, Happy Memorial Day. I hope you hugged a veteran (in my case, I high-fived mine) and enjoyed potato salad at the very least.

4.0 and credit card fraud

I have received a couple of e-mails to expand on the tweets posted in relation to a vague credit card fraud incident.

Basically, in a world that is increasingly dependent on technology and has ample paper trails about every individual that potentially contain sensitive information, it is relatively easy for someone to a) steal one’s identity and b) commit credit fraud.

My identity was actually stolen three years ago via paper checks by a check processing employee, which is why I switched over to plastic and added extra protection to my accounts. Yet, my account wasn’t leaked through a botched or hacked online transaction; rather, it was more than likely someone I had entrusted the card with during the advent of Mother’s Day shopping who decided to steal from me. It is not something one thinks about usually, especially myself, being a trusting soul. However, it is quite simple for someone, perhaps an unethical and struggling food server or cashier, to jot down a few numbers and skim the back of a patron’s card for the security code. There were several instances where stores had malfunctioning credit card swipe machines. There have definitely been times where I have nonchalantly handed my credit card over at restaurants in order to pay for the bill. I may never know exactly how this information was compromised, but hopefully this experience will help some of you to avoid similar unfortunate events in the future.

Another new method introduced by these fraudulent thieves has been referred to as ‘vishing,’ where someone or an automated messaging system will actually call, posing themselves as a bank representative, and ask for one’s identifying information (social security number, bank account number, permanent address) in order to verify ‘suspicious activity’ on an account. Case in point: When my bank called me, I did not initially believe them. I searched the website contact information, and could not find their alleged Fraud Department listed anywhere. I called the main toll-free line and had them transfer me directly over. Sometimes, the safest method is to take the longer, more extenuated route. It can be a pain, but I would prefer to break lazy habits in the name of security.

I hope this short post was beneficial, and I thank everyone who congratulated me on my unexpected 4.0 GPA this semester. It was quite a shock to me as well.

the follow through

It’s only instinctive to call it quits, sometimes. When the going gets tough, the exasperated give up. It’s also beneficial to know one’s limitations; not only when to remain affixed to a boundary line, but to surpass expectations, exceed standards of the minimal and mundane.

more about “Squirrel Fight on Yahoo! Video“, posted with vodpod

The most important detail of that thought is to follow through — sometimes, people stop because they want reprieve, a shout of “UNCLE! I SAID, UNCLE!!!” in order to get a buffering zone of space. To be left alone. To suffer in silence, or worse, harm themselves. And sometimes, a true blue friend or significant other just has to push through and wait. Stand serene and available, having the patience until said person opens one eye, and sees you standing there, ready to will them forward again.

a bit o’ poetic questioning

There is an edge to the dark, a hint of danger in the peace, the silence. Then again, the silence is a warm cocoon; it wraps around the sharp, dingy edges of the metallic dumpsters full up of discarded belongings and hopeful rats. Suggestions of birth and renewal pull at the corners of the damp street. Cracked pavement settles for the water as it builds, and holds secrets of a thousand past footsteps, life stories. There is sweetness, protection, and a mixture of foreboding that lingers in the tombs of hollowed out buildings.

An altogether overwhelming sense of urgency and beckoning is dusted off the overgrown trees, leaves, and falls onto begrudging shoulders. Let us move on, then. Propel us toward pulling open the door, and facing whatever exists on the other side. The dark night has grown too cold, but exactly what type of shelter are we headed toward, anyway?

in the name of sleep

I am writing this sentence instead of beginning a “final” due today.

Sometimes, sleep is more important.

dear abuser,

You mistreated her and initiated another generation of harm. There is no relative end to the damage you started. These things are causative and cyclic in nature. The only thing I am grateful for is that half my genetics are not from you. She left in time.

What you did was inexcusable, and her learned helplessness and blunted sorrow never left her eyes. I stared into that gaze for almost 23 years. I grew in her womb. How do you think that affected me? Her? All of us?

Domestic abusers harm more than their immediate victims. Their families, their future children, and grandchildren may all feel the horrendous impact by the (emotional, verbal, physical, and sexual) marks left on those they hurt. Some perpetuate the pain. It is their only means of expression.

This Mothers’ Day is one to bring awareness to this issue. I am not a day late in posting this – there has never been a time more appropriate. Families and couples can only remain intact with mutual love and respect for one another. The foundation must be solid and healthy in order to raise well-adjusted children. Children learn by example, and model after their caregivers.

What kind of an example will you be? How much will you put up with before the final line is crossed?

This has been a BloggersUnite post in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Day.

zombies are NOT funny

I do not advocate movies that underplay the real and explicit danger of zombie takeovers. It makes the threat of zombies into a joke, when they are antithetic to anything remotely humorous or funny. The following footage should not be reacted to with laughter (as the producers and writers mistakenly intended):

It should evoke fear into your hearts of a society ever trusting a zombie that much.

You can thank a friend for sending me the image below (from an unknown source). I do not promote violence, but when one is dealing with a threat of getting eaten and/or infected by the undead, sometimes a bit of self-protection is necessary:

Luckily enough, some Zombie Hunters (Experts!!!) made tutorials about how to survive in the advent of a zombie influx:

I hope this post helped you to understand the seriousness of this situation, and realize that Hollywood and negligent heads of mass media continue to endanger your life and those of your loved ones. You heard the zombie gurus (and notably, the facts match up with the description offered by the film, Fido) – the only thing that zombies want to do is eat your flesh! So, now that you’ve been properly educated – Prepare yourself. Take care.
